Hurricane Helene tore through Asheville, North Carolina, after making landfall in Florida’s Big
Bend on September 26, 2024. The storm, packing 140 mph winds, unleashed a path of
devastation as it traveled northward, causing catastrophic flooding across Western North
Carolina. Asheville faced unprecedented levels of destruction. The Swannanoa and French Broad rivers surged beyond their banks, submerging entire neighborhoods, including Asheville’s historic Biltmore Village. Floodwaters rose as high as five feet inside homes and businesses, leaving many destroyed.
The extent of the damage in Asheville has been staggering. Over 700 homes have been reported destroyed, while entire communities were left underwater, isolating thousands of residents and cutting off major routes, including I-40 and I-26. Search and rescue operations have been ongoing, with over 1,000 people still unaccounted for and at least 30 confirmed deaths in Buncombe County alone. Flooding forced the closure of businesses and left millions without power, with access to necessities becoming increasingly scarce.
Asheville’s recovery will be long and arduous. Residents and emergency responders are working tirelessly to navigate the challenges posed by the destruction, but the need for support remains critical as the region begins
its path to recovery.
Celestial Point Inc., a nonprofit organization founded in 2022, is urgently seeking emergency
